Crab Apple

Last Spring, which seems like just a few days ago, I posted a picture of my crab apple tree in bloom.  I complained that it was the only time of the year that I liked the tree because it lost its leaves and became very ugly by the middle of the Summer.

As all good things do, the tree has gone on this year to prove me a liar.  Here it is, September, and it still has its leaves, and, a bountiful crop of crab apples, to boot.  We had an unusually wet summer, and I think that may have had something to do with it.  All I can say is that the deer are going to have good eating, once those things begin to fall.

Our crab apple is similarly fruitful this year! The little fruits are such a pretty color.

Louise...I don't know about a new editor. Do you still have my phone number? Could you call me sometime?

We have two of the same trees and this summer they have not looked all that great.

Never had crab apples around our place, it looks like a very nice tree, however.

The deer aren't waiting for the crab apples to drop but I let them eat to their hearts content. (keeps me from having to chase them out of the garden)

I have noted the same thing in Iowa this year - with the very wet year, the crabapples, among other blossoming trees, have not lost their leaves this year. It really does make them look much nicer. I agree with the jelly idea!! Don't give them all to the deer!

My Grandmother used to make spicy pickled crab apples, by the pint and we had a jar for every family dinner. Really, REALLY good! (Nope, I don't have the recipe, sorry)

Hi Louise, I've been so busy writing for my blog that I have missed reading others. I looked at the lake below and your tree here and it is all so lovely. Time goes so much faster once we retire, I think. I am looking forward to seeing the fall colors in your part of the country.--Inger

Hey Louise, I had a new (to me) blogger stop by, and I thought I'd pass it on to you because the beautiful nature photography made me think of you. http://justamomentpixels.blogspot.com/
Enjoy.

spicy crab apples.

I was always disappointed when they didn't show up at christmas

I suspect Mom lost her source for the apples.

What a handsome crabapple tree. It puts my little tree to shame. (Mine is totally in the wrong spot but I don't want to shift it because the sheep like it.)
