Out of My Rear Window 2/27/11

More snow last night makes for a really beautiful view this morning.  It won't last long.  The temperature is supposed to hit the mid to upper 30's today, and could get up to 50 tomorrow, with rain.  That will make a real mess.

But, today is absolutely beautiful.  The sun is out brightly and it's inviting me outside to play,
Out of my front window you can see a clear road and more lovely fluffy snow.  That's my new suet feeder hanging from the linden tree.  It's only been up a couple of days, and hasn't had any visitors yet.  I'm watching it closely because I'm not sure that this is the right place for it.  It may be too close to the busy road.  I wanted it in a different place from the rest of the feeders, and somewhere closer to the house, so that I could get some good pictures.  I'll give it a couple of weeks there, and, if it hasn't attracted any birds by then, I'll move it further back into the yard.
I was wondering why the feeders were so quiet.  Normally, on a morning like this, they would be brimming with avian life.  Then I saw why.  The Red-Tailed Hawk (ok, it's a Cooper's per two people who know so very much more than I do.  That's cool, I never noticed one before)  is back, high in a tree surveying the entire yard.  As long as he is there, no one is going to be dumb enough to hit the feeders.

Have a peaceful and happy Sunday, everyone!

suet feeder should be fine there, we have one on a much busier street corner.

though why not in back with the other feeders?

I believe the bird in the photos is a young Coopers Hawk.

Enjoy the snow before it turns to slush and mud! Looks lovely!

My feeder has been like a traffic jam, I have it by my living room window and every kind of bird has been there. And they are going for my home made suet instead of the cheap ones from the feed store. It's like they never ate before.
Now it's supposed to be 50 tomorrow and the mud starts! 8>)

We have fresh snow and bright sunshine here too, Louise. It's easier to enjoy it when you know it isn't going to last too long!

I would guess that's a Cooper's Hawk too.

Mr. Hawk is beautiful - even though he is somewhat of a bully!

Great photos, they remind me of my years in Princeton, NJ, with those large trees and peaceful neighborhoods. The hawk is gorgeous and so nice to pose like that for you. I wish those around here would be a bit more cooperative in that respect.--Inger

Great shots of the hawk waiting for the buffet to open.

Nice pictures of the hawk, would be nice if he moved on, now that you have his mug shot.

Snow is pretty, when you know it's going to leave soon. :-)

The birds are really making a racket here!

Oh my, that is a LOT of snow! It has been very cold here, but no snow for us (I live on the Mediterranean coast).

That hawk is absolutely amazing! Very nice of him to pose like that for you:))

The snow sure is pretty. Love your hawk photos. I'm looking forward to seeing photos from the suet feeder. It'll be interesting to see who shows up.

Happy Sunday Louise,
Oh the snow is very pretty and refreshing...it is almost 80 here today too hot for February.
We have more unseasonal temps for tomorrow followed by some t-storms.
Great shot of the Hawk....
Hugs to you and the kitties,
Madi and Mom

That's a very pretty hawk. I'm glad I'm too big for one of those to fly down to pick me up!

I guess I know where all the snow has gone too!

Louise, I have to tell you that I always look forward to seeing what's out your rear window on a Sunday!! I hope you've had a good day!!

I think that perhaps our springs are very similar - huge dumps of snow followed by mudfests!

Gorgeous photos. Love the hawk but I hope that everyone stayed hidden until he left!

Wow, you got some great shots of the hawk! We seem to have very similar weather, we had a lovely day here with fluffy snow. Tomorrow we'll get some rain and snow together.

Hope you Sunday was really good!

Hawks are so beautiful. I love to see them, but not when my chickens are out foraging.
You live on such a pretty road. But my! You've been getting so much snow this winter. We typically get a lot of snow, but this winter has been so mild with only 2 good snows and only a handful of flurries and that one terrible week with -27F temps.
Today it is almost 60 degrees and sunny.

Looks like you're getting the same weather as us, a day earlier. I was just out in the rain trying to shovel sleety slush from the driveway, and it was miserable!

And what a good shot of the Cooper's hawk. I've heard them once or twice (if I remember correctly, they are the whistlers?), but they are rare in my books! But we did have a sharp-shinned hawk around here recently looking to snack on our feeder birds.

Sometimes when you put up a new feeder the birds are slow to come to it, but if you tie a couple of bright ribbons to it, they come faster!
