My Newest Visitor

Here I am, looking out of that back window again.  And, what do I see?  This charming fellow.
I don't think I've ever seen an opossum at the feeder before.  But, I do think I may have seen this guy.  A couple of times in the last few weeks, I've looked out of my window after it's dark, to see a small shape sitting quietly at the feeder.  At first, I thought RAT! RAT! RAT! and was ready to stop feeding altogether.  But, it didn't act like a rodent, who tend to be much more active.  It think that the mystery has just been solved.  He's kind of a cute little thing, in an ugly sort of way, isn't he?

Oh my gosh the young opossum is just getting his land legs....Looks like you have a new mouth to feed...wonder where the mom is? Another blogger was run out of her home over the weekend because a big 'possum had found its way into her attic and was driving her crazy...

They're almost like a cross between a rat and a cat. I personally think they're pretty cute. Once again, I LOVE the critters at your feeders!

Yuck....looks an awful lot like Mr. Rat which we had here a couple weeks ago. We had to move our bird feeders!

I didn't think opossums were supposed to be out during the day.

Can a possum highway be far off?

I think it's cool! Did you know that opossums are marsupials and have little pouches for their babies like kangaroos do? He may not be the most beautiful animal but he sure is fascinating!

Oh my, that little guy is really cute! I've never seen one in real life. I saw one on TV last night.

Rose, opossums are nocturnal. This picture was taken in the very late afternoon, almost dusk. I think a lot of the critters have learned that they have to get to the feeder before the Mallards arrive, because, after they are done, nothing is left.

Wait until you see the picture I got late THIS afternoon. I'll post it tomorrow morning.

Interesting info from some of your commenters. I also did not know that they would come out during the day or even late evening. Very interesting about the kangaroo pouch they have...too cool. I have only seen some once, a family of babes on a Mama's back at the zoo.

Not my favorite critter in the world, but they are kinda cute in a weaselly sort of way.

I really try to see their beauty, but have to admit I have problems doing that--However, your photo does kinda capture a small amount of cuteness! :-))

i lub da possums. they seem kind of sweet and goofy, and not too threatening. of course, my chickens are locked up tight at night when my little possum buddy goes cruising by at 10 pm.

Ah, lovely! We don't seem to have possums here but used to see them in the Toronto area, often missing the tip of their tail, which tends to freeze off in the winter. I love their star-shaped snow prints.

Awww... I'm definitely in the "so ugly that they're awfully cute" category when it comes to Opossums.
