As if Ten Squirrels Weren't Enough

How about 10 deer?
This poor duck looks like he doesn't know which way to run.
When I saw these deer, I remembered that it was about this time last year when they started to hit my feeder area in much greater numbers.  I remember thinking at the time that this must be the famous Starvation Moon.  But, I looked it up and the Starvation Moon is the January full moon.  The February full moon is called the Ice, or Snow Moon.  I think that whoever named them must have lived further South.

By this time, especially with the hard winter that we have had, the woods must be practically denuded of edible branches.  It will be over a month before there is anything green to eat back there.  I know it's nature, and there is nothing to be done, but I still feel for these beautiful creatures, as they face their hardest days.

What??? Is that in town or on a farm? That is amazing! Imagine just sitting on your coach and seeing that!

I live in Suburbia, Liesl. But, I'm fortunate enough that my property (all one acre of it, lol) backs up on a large wooded area on very steep land, that goes down to a big fresh water bay. That land has not been developed, and I don't think it will be allowed to be, because it's a watershed and the woods keep the earth stable. That's why, in the middle of McMansion and Mall hell, I am privileged to be visited by all of these wonderful creatures.

Wow!! Are you ever lucky. You could put a salt lick out and have your very own deer herd!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.

They are beautiful. Do you put out extra feed for them? My neighbors in SC used to feed cracked corn. They even built a feed trough for the deer!

You are indeed privileged!!! I LOVE your backyard! Wow! Those poor beauties! I want to drop a load of corn for them!

Looks like you are living in the middle of nowhere with all the wild critters that come and visit you. I hope these lovely deer will find enough to eat until spring. It must be so hard for them.--Inger

I saw four today in the park, someone had put out a big pile of apples.

Nice pictures, Louise! We just get to see them across the road (or on the road), they don't come here because of the dogs. Did the duck get to eat?

you are a girl after my own heart. kudos to you for helping them but never feed a starved deer corn, it will crash their system. those deer look in excellent shape. i feed year round.

Oh my goodness - I've never seen so many deer in one yard before! I let out a laugh when I saw your first photo!

It is the toughest time of year for them but, as you said, it's nature. Our elk always start looking skinny over the next month or so...

A sleigh and Santa is a great idea!

Grape jelly will bring Orioles way faster than organes, I have put both out at the same time and they go for the jelly every time. I keep it out all summer, robins and house finches will eat it also.
