Yesterday, though, I saw a bird I had never seen before. I looked out the window, saw a bird on the trunk of the maple tree and thought, "oh, a nuthatch." Then I did a double take, because this bird was brown and white, not grey, black and white, and, it was a much slimmer bird than the nuthatches. I grabbed my camera, and took some pictures. Here's the best of them.
My first thought was that it was a different type of nuthatch, but a little research told me that this was a brown creeper. How cool! All these years, and I have never seen one before. Here's a clearer picture that I got from the net (free files).

I call them walking woodchips
shaggy and brown they go up trees sand blend right in
here they will sometimes respond if I whistle their call

"Walking woodchips!" That's a good one! Such a sweet little bird and hardly ever seen because it looks just like the bark of the trees it inches up. You had a delightful surprise. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Oooh! We have those down here in the woods but don't see them much! They are so cute! Their little hop, hop, hop!
What a great shot Louise! A Brown Creeper....Just looked it up in the Peterson Field Guide of Eastern Birds. In summers it can be found here in Nova Scotia as well. I have never seen one here. Learn something new everyday! Thanks.

I know what you mean about being familiar with the local wildlife. I could name every bird and most plants I saw growing up in NE Ohio...but then I moved south, and have to start another lifetime's worth of learning!
That is a good picture; I recognized that brown creeper immediately. I don't think I'll ever learn my new home's flora and fauna that well.

I don't think I've ever seen a brown creeper either. We have lots nuthatches they are all so cute. Birds are very active at the feeders. Now is the season to buy lots of seed and suet.
