Out of My Rear Window 1/30/11

Just an ordinary day.  It is very still, and there is a light snow falling.  I haven't seen a critter at the feeder all morning.

So, cheating a bit, here is a picture of some white-tailed deer at the feeder last night.  Yesterday, it snowed off and on all day.  When it is snowing, I put the food out in piles, rather than scattering it.  I have noticed that the birds seem to be able to find it better and, by rooting around in it, they also keep it clear.

I haven't seen any deer at the feeder all winter.  They usually come late at night, to gather any small pickings that the squirrels and birds have left.  Don't ask me how they knew that there were easier than usual pickings last night, but, there they were.  So, these four got nice full bellies to face the winter night.
And, if you have time, here's a short video of the same deer.

Oh so beautiful! That is one thing I never get to see here - too many cows, coyotes and human inhabitation here. :(

The deer are a good "capture"! A few days ago, we saw a huge herd up in the cows meadow (sans cows) and there must have been 25-30 of them - deer season is over, you know.

Oh they are darling! Such wonderful entertainment for you.
The other animals must know the deer are coming and stay away?
There are so many tracks out there, though. You can see how popular your feeding station is.

You can see from the tracks how popular your feeding station is for all the critters. I bet you are missing seeing the ground, though.

The deer are darling! And must be wonderful entertainmentfor you, too.

So the deer come right into your garden Louise? What happens in the summer -do they eat all your plants?

Oh my goodness I love the deer video....
Sometimes the birds are not very thankful for all we do for them. I put out thistle, safflour,
mixed seed and fresh water at 1:30...as of this posting not one single bird has come to my buffet...but then (and I'm sorry to rub it in) but it is 63 degrees here, sunny and I expect the birds are having a lake party just a few blocks away. Weather is short lived...only in the 40s tomorrow.
Hugs to you all,
madi and mom

Hi Louise! I hope you've gotten or will get some new snow!! Great video and pictures of the deer! They look so healthy! I've not seen any in awhile, but know they're around, I see their prints in the snow--No sign of my feral cat though...Hope it's okay...

I so enjoy seeing deer from time to time, good catch.

Cahoot measured a little too tall, we'll let the judges measure and see what they think. He's a great breeder even if we don't show him,as in, I've got a lot $$$ in him. :-)

The deer are so sweet! What a great rear window you have.
Friend Jan and I saw "The King's Speech" today - we loved it. It's the first movie I've seen in years.

The deer are beautiful. Do they cause problems by eating shrubs and flowers?
One of my SC friends feeds deer, squirrels and raccoons. As we aren't near trees here, we don't have any of those woodland creatures, but will probably see more of them in our new home. We've already seen some deer, even one who decided to use the barn for shelter since no one else was using it.

The deer look so young and delicate. Gorgeous.

Do you get bears at your feeders in the summer?

I have a spray called "Deer Off" that I buy. It stinks like blue blazes, but it keeps the deer away from the few plants I have, mainly the daylilies, that aren't deer resistant.

We, luckily, don't have bears around here. I have a good friend about 40 miles south of me, however, who can't feed the birds in the warmer weather, when the bears are active.

Nice video of the 4 deer, we have them around here but have not seen any in our yard, probably because of the dogs.
