What's That Old Saying?

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.  Maybe, maybe not.  When I'm sitting outside, some of the birds will come to the feeder, even though I'm close.  Some, however, are too shy, and sit in the lilac bush at the end of the stone wall.  They wait patiently until I leave.  I decided to see, yesterday, if I could get pictures of them, as they waited.  If you enlarge the pictures, you'll see them waiting there.

This little guy, however, has no problem coming to the feeder when I'm outside.
No luck, yet, getting him to take seed from my hand.  I think he figures "why risk it when I can get one right from the feeder?"

yeah, i've heard you pretty much have to remove your feeders, then stand there with seed in your hand to get them to come in. i don't have the patience! :)

The birds around here are pretty skiddish, they wait in the pear tree until the coast is clear. That's why most of my pictures are through the window. :-)

Yes I still haven't master that yet either, taking seeds from my hand,I think I am not patient enough, the squirrels however have no problem taking things by hand though. Still working on the chipmunks too.
I love all your birdfeeder pictures.

I know .. they all depart when I come outside as well. Fortunately, my office window overlooks their feeders not 10-15 feet away ... the only one I've had luck with eating out of my hand is the hummingbird and sat right next to his feeder.

LOL do they chatter at you while you are filling the feeders?
I've found the chickadees, wrens and finches are quite brave for little birds. They will come up to the feeder as soon as I put it back even when I'm working on another feeder.

Happy Friday,

Like TexWisGirl, I would say you would need to remove the feeder and be patient. I'm not patient enough either, though it is quite a thrill when a bird takes a seed from your hand.
